According to the DIRECTIVE (EU) 2018/2001 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, biofuels must comply with and verify their environmental sustainability throughout the entire chain, since their manufacture to their consumption. This Directive sets the objective of replacing 10% of fossil fuel consumption with first and second generation biofuels. Those of the first generation are limited to a maximum of 7% and have the disadvantage that they compete with food production. Second generation biofuels have a share of, at least, 3,5% of the final energy consumption in transport sector. All biofuels must come from certified resources and must be verified throughout the entire chain.
Of all the certifications recognized by the European Commission in reference to compliance and verification of biofuels, the ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (https://www.iscc-system.org) is the one of highest rigour and implementation at international level. This system is valid for both biofuels and chemicals originated from biomass or residues.
CARBON FOOTPRINT REGISTERS
The carbon footprint quantifies the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere, resulting from the development of a specific activity, allowing us to estimate its generated impact on global warming.
PRECO understands carbon footprint not only as a mere calculation, but as the first step to improve and to commit to GHG emissions’ reduction.
